In 2012, 19,183 Australian children were injured in motor vehicle-related incidents according to Safekids Worldwide.
A Wollongong City Council spokesman said children were more likely to be hurt as they had less road experience and could behave unpredictably around traffic.
"Primary school patrols [are performed] by rangers in an effort to increase the safety of the children.
"It is not a problem that will be resolved simply; it requires a long-term commitment by the school to the safety of the children coming and going."
Wollongong council has sent reminders to schools urging principals, parents and citizens' associations to adopt a Roads and Maritime Services approved pick-up and drop-off scheme, often called "kiss and ride".
"It begins with the school and P&C organising parents to pick children up correctly using an RMS sanctioned safe pick-up and drop-off zone," the spokesman said.
Online safety advocate Kidsafe NSW said children needed to be carefully equipped with traffic knowledge.
Whenever crossing roads with children, parents were advised to discuss when and why it is safe to cross to develop their children's traffic skills.

■ Follow the directions of school crossing supervisors who help children use the crossings on roads adjacent to or nearby schools.
■ Adult supervision is recommended for children under 11 years to and from the school gate.
■ Avoid crossing at roundabouts which can be unsafe and confusing for pedestrians.
■ Observe parking restrictions at schools as these are put in place to reduce pedestrian hazards.
