Wollongong fighter 'Magic' Mick Mlacic says winning a state title after a decade-long hiatus from the ring will be an extra special feeling should he get the nod in his March 27 bout at Club Punchbowl.
A former Australian lightweight champion, Mlacic has notched a win and two draws in three catch-weights bouts since making his comeback in June last year. But with a longer preparation for this bout, Mlacic is confident he can outgun rising Fijian star Jese Ravudi who, at 22, is 12 years his junior.
Mlacic is coming off a majority decision victory over Michael Dan in September last year, while Ravudi won a unanimous decision over Warilla's Adrian Campbell - a former sparring partner of Mlacic - in November. Ravudi previously defeated Port Macquarie's Will Sands, whom Mlacic fought to a draw in a televised Fox Sports card at Broadbeach in August.
The proud Croat will likely have plenty of support at the Club Punchbowl venue which was formerly known as the Croatian Club.
"When I came back originally it was just to see how I went but I always hoped I might fight for a title again," he said.
"To get the chance to do that at the Croatian Club, which is my background, would be pretty special. I last won a title in 2004, so it's been a long time and it would mean a lot to me."
The bout will be a rare match between two southpaws but Mlacic believes sparring several rounds with local southpaw Nathan Wright - whose IBO Oceania title bout will headline the same card - has him well prepared.
"I've seen him fight a few times and he's like me, a southpaw, who likes to come forward so it should be good fight and the crowd will enjoy it. I've been sparring rounds with Nathan and I think he's a better fighter, so that's been good preparation. By the time I get in the ring I'll have had an eight-week preparation which is the longest I've had in any fight since I came back, so I'll be ready to go."
Trainer Brad Gallagher has also enlisted Dragons great Shaun Timmins as strength and conditioning coach for the fight.
"He's just where I want to be at this point six weeks out from the fight," Gallagher said. "The weight's right on track and we've trained a bit different this time with some strength and conditioning with Shaun Timmins."
