The teenager had been riding a scooter when he fell and hit his head.
Ambulance officers attended the scene at 12.30pm and transported him to the Launceston General Hospital.
Police said he died shortly after arriving at the LGH.
Inspector Scott Flude said the teenager had not been wearing a helmet when he fell, but he was known to usually follow safety precautions.
Inspector Flude said the accident was extremely unfortunate.
‘‘This is pretty tragic. It’s just a terrible incident,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s a terrible reminder to always wear helmets on hard surfaces.’’
Tasmania Police said investigations into the incident were continuing, and that they would be preparing a report for the coroner.
