The South Coast/Snowy Mountain region is a fantastic place to be living for anglers who enjoy a diversity of species.
On Saturday morning I was standing knee deep in the Eucumbene River enjoying the annual brown trout spawning run, which truly is a world class fishery that attracts fishers from around Australia and potentially around the world.
While the river flow over the weekend was a bit down and the water crystal clear, the fish were plentiful if a little tougher to catch.
A good strategy was to go down to 4-pound leader particularly on the leader connecting the glo-bug or egg pattern to the tungsten headed nymph on a dropper below.
Using as much weight as possible in the form of split shot also ensured the flies were down on the bottom bumping the fish in the face.
Some would argue the brown require thinning out, but there is a strict one fish per day limit and this fish has to be at least 50cm in length.
So that was Saturday morning. And after a leisurely three-hour trip down Brown Mountain it was back home setting up the boat for a Montague Island trip on Sunday morning.
The kingfish fishing on Saturday was some of the best all year, but by Sunday it was mostly “rats” or undersize fish taking jigs in the morning.
I was however able to get onto a bigger fish, my first legal size fish in what seems like a year, using a whole small squid on a running rig left out the back while I was jigging up the rats.
Bang there it was a nice kingfish just over 70cm and I couldn’t be happier – what a weekend!
