A group of Illawarra teenagers is now equipped to step up in times of emergency, thanks to an intensive secondary school cadet program with the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Nineteen Albion Park High School students from years 9, 10 and 11 graduated from the course last week, and are proud to be able to serve the community if ever an emergency arises.
The 10-week program was run through school hours to those who put up their hand, and taught the students to be competent around bush, grass or house fires, along with other practical skills such as first aid.
Jordan Darracott, 16, said he had also picked up valuable life skills in commitment and leadership, and wanted to sign up to the service when he turns 18.
‘‘After doing it I realised that’s what I want to do when I finish school,’’ he said.
‘‘I [really like] helping people and the camaraderie of being in a team... and I think the others really enjoyed it too.’’
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education teacher Adam Blake said he noticed a huge boost in confidence among the students who took part, and saw many flourish in the team environment.
‘‘You can see they’re proud of their achievements,’’ Mr Blake said. ‘‘[They get a] sense of pride, helping other people out and being involved in a team.’’
