As well as being the guitarist of the ground-breaking Wollongong band Tumbleweed, Curley has also been responsible for most of the band’s artwork over the past three decades.
He has created album covers, posters and merchandise design including the highly collectable Tumbleweed comic books.
His artistic influences have included Batman comics, MAD magazines, Star Wars picture books and the Ramones.
‘‘I have been told I could spell Batman and draw the bat symbol before I could spell my own name,’’ he said.
Up until now, Curley has never had a solo art exhibition. Fans have had to scour for this work in record shops or at the occasional group art show.
Curley is staging his first solo exhibition at the Beach Burrito Company Wollongong with the opening night on Friday, July 31, from 6pm.
He will be showcasing 12 works, which are all print editions available for sale for $15 each.
Curley draws with pens, quills and paint brushes – black on white paper.
‘‘For this exhibition I am colouring images on a computer,’’ he said.
‘‘I enjoy the process of looking for and mixing different images to produce an original image.
“I want to make people laugh and at the same time make other people uncomfortable with a single image.’’
Tumbleweed will hit the road touring in September.
