The Citos combination clinched their first Zone 16 title beating Wiseman Park's Dylan Skinner and Shane Garvey (skip) 22-17 in Sunday's decider.
Gillis and his skip Spears came from 17-15 down in the final and won five games over two weekends to take the biggest pairs prize in Illawarra bowls.
The pair beat Towradgi Park's Paul Condon and Rod Busst 20-18 in the semi-finals, plus edged past father and son Col and Jason Cheadle (Wiseman Park) 20-17 in Saturday's quarter-final.
In a great weekend for Dapto Citizens BC, former State Pairs champion Brian Harriott claimed his second Illawarra Senior Pairs crown in partnering Fred Thompson to the title.
Harriott-Thompson beat Figgy Bowlo’s John Jovcevski and Tony Dunn 27-8 in the final at Dapto BC.
Meanwhile, Shane Garvey was chasing his second open pairs title and fifth Zone 16 crown overall following a 23-10 semi-final win over defending champion Jeremy Henry and his new Warilla partner Jesse Noronha.
But in windy conditions Gillis and Spears held their nerve in the big moments to book a spot as Zone 16's representatives at the State Championship Finals at Ettalong Memorial BC in October.
The Citos combination won four matches by five shots or less, including a 24-21 round three win over Windang’s Glen Bryant and Mick Barber.
In the Illawarra Senior Pairs Championship, Harriott skipped his side to a 26-16 win over Godwin Buhagair and Richard Humble (Figgy Bowlo) in their semi.
Harriott and Thompson had their toughest match in the quarter-finals, edging out Oak Flats’ John Noble and Allan Bramble 19-18.
Jovcevski-Dunn played their best match of the event to upset Ted Clarke and Geoff McGillivray (Warilla) 17-14 in the semi-finals.
In the Illawarra President’s Reserve Pairs for pennant players in Grade 5-7, Albion Park’s Vinh Ong and Wayne Crouch took the title with a 26-19 win over Windang’s Doug Allen and Bob Driscoll in Sunday’s final.
The Albion Park team edged out Windang BC brothers Phil and Paul Cable 17-16 in the semi-finals, while Allen-Driscoll beat Windang’s Nick Mackovski and Simon Lipscom 25-21.
