He has been busy writing nylon-stringed guitar tracks in getting ready to showcase his new jazz, funk and Spanish instrumental band.
I’ve personally been a big fan of Simon’s for years and think he is one of the best guitarists who’s ever picked up a six-string.
When I was in high school, my dad would drive me out to Simon’s place in Jamberoo, which took us almost an hour to get there once you got through all the old farm gates and dodged all the cow patties.
And although it was a bit of a mission to get there, it was well worth my time to get to sit down with this guy for 45 minutes and learn all about the guitar from one of the best in the business.
He is definitely the guy who’s influenced me most on the guitar and I’m forever grateful for his guidance.
With his studio now a bit closer to the Jamberoo township, Simon has built up a solid relationship with the Jamberoo Pub, which will be hosting the launch of Simon’s new project this coming weekend.
The new band involves some of the area’s best musos including renowned drummer Brody Toombs, as well as the Masterton brothers from local funk/reggae band Tommy M and the Mastersounds.
Jayden Masterton will be on the rhythm guitar and while he is still in his teens, he has Yoda-like guitar skills.
Jayden’s brother Tommy is on bass guitar and knows that thing like Lebron knows a basketball.
And of course on the nylon-string guitar is the man himself, Simon Dyos.
When I asked Simon how this all started he said, “I’ve had a life-long passion of playing and teaching the guitar that has continued to this day.
“The inspiration for this current project came after I got myself a new nylon acoustic guitar from your store eight months ago,” he said. “The band has a really dynamic sound with each member adding their own great skills.
“I’m looking forward to doing more gigs with the band as this style of music is quite unique for the Illawarra area.”
Simon Dyos and his new band will be performing for free at Jamberoo Pub on Saturday, December 5, starting at 8:30pm.
