While the Hawks flew direct from Auckland to Perth following Sunday’s win over New Zealand, Penney made a solo flight back to Wollongong to consult with club medical staff.
Coach Rob Beveridge had held onto the slim chance of Penney responding to treatment and making a last-minute dash west on Wednesday but those hopes were quashed.
Instead the 35-year-old underwent further scans on the injury with club medical staff labeling the results: “much more favourable than expected.”
It also continues a horror injury run for the Hawks who sit equal second despite their heavy toll.
Tyson Demos has been ruled out for the remainder of the season while Kevin Lisch, Rhys Martin and Cody Ellis have all missed games through injury at various points of the year.
