Last week traffic was diverted onto a newly built section of Toolijooa Road, to allow work to continue on the new Toolijooa Road bridge.
“It’s great to see motorists using this new section of road and to have the opportunity to inspect progress on the Toolijooa Road cutting,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward said.
The Toolijooa Road bridge is one of 12 bridges in the upgrade. Roads and Maritime Services released a time-lapse video showing construction of another bridge – across Broughton Creek.
The video, which is on the Mercury website, shows some of the 36 girders, each 32 metres long and weighing 56 tonnes, being lifted into place by a 500-tonne crane.
“The camera has taken footage which gives an amazing indication of the precision and work which goes into building the bridges,” Mr Ward said.
