Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird said the money would help Wollongong’s Rotary Club upgrade their PCYC bus “on it’s last legs”, which was especially important in helping disadvantaged kids participate in programs like sports and tutoring.
Upgrading electronic scoreboards and amenities at the Wollongong Australian Football Club and Corrimal Cougars Club would help them generate their own income by competing to host a range of games.
Grant applications are open until April 29, for details contact Sharon Birds office.
If in Throsby, contact Stephen Jones.
“I know how hard it is for local groups to fundraise to upgrade facilities and replace items such as scoreboards. It can take months and years for volunteers in small organisations to raise this type of money,” Sharon Bird said.
“The community bus that Wollongong PCYC currently uses is almost 20 years old and worn out.
“The bus services a number of community groups such as Rotary, the Disability Trust, Purple Ribbon Workshops, Twilight Tournaments, Youth off the Streets and the William Campbell Foundation.”
The first successful applications under Round 1 for the Cunningham electorate are:
· Rotary Club of Wollongong – $20,000
Purchase of a community bus for Wollongong PCYC
· Wollongong Australian Football Club – $20,000
NDP scoreboard replacement and dressing room refurbishment
· Corrimal Cougars Rugby League Football Club – $5,500
Replacement of the dilapidated scoreboard at Ziems Park
· Sutherland Shire Council – $15,530
