It is believed the man’s wife witnessed the accident, which occurred in O’Donnell Street, Port Kembla, about 6.30pm on Saturday.
It is understood the man and his wife had just attended church at St Patrick’s and he was crossing the road ahead of her when the accident happened.
A 20-year-old P-plate driver in a Toyota utility struck the man at the top of the hill.
Police said the driver claimed he did not see the man crossing the road.
The driver stopped his car and checked on the man before ringing Triple-zero.
The pedestrian suffered head and chest injuries, a ruptured lung and fractured legs and pelvis.
A rescue helicopter was called and the man was airlifted to St George Hospital.
On Sunday he was in intensive care in a critical but stable condition.
The driver’s on-scene breath test was negative.
Meantime highway patrol officers are urging motorists to take care and drive safely with heavy traffic expected on NSW roads with the end of school holidays and the ANZAC Day long weekend.
Six people have lost their lives on NSW roads over the long weekend – the latest death being a man at East Gosford on Sunday morning.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, said police are out in force this long weekend, but ultimately it is up to those behind the wheel, to take care and drive safely to keep themselves and their families safe.
“Fatigue is one of the big three killers on NSW roads. Being awake for about 17 hours has a similar effect on performance as a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said.
