Member for Throsby Stephen Jones announced a $19,831 Stronger Communities grant for the upgrade and installation of new play equipment at the park. Banardos South Coast program manager Lisa Fleming said the funds would be used to purchase and install an air glider, soft fall and resurface and spray the half-court, which is currently concrete.
“The area is in disgusting condition and none of it’s functional,” Ms Fleming said.
“Parts of the equipment are rusted and coming apart and the hooks that held the nets are just hanging there. If we go over to the park to use the basketball area we have to take chalk over to mark up a court, so other than that the equipment can’t be used by the kids. It’s actually quite dangerous.” Ms Fleming said the local community had been very involved in seeking funding, signing petitions and consulting with local youth about what kind of equipment they would like.
“The kids are constantly asking why is it we don’t have a nice park? Now finally through petitions and community consultation they have finally had a breakthrough and a little bit of a difference can be made in this area for our young people with some kind of functional park area.”
