While everyone will start Saturday with a minimum of 10k BettaBucks there is a good chunk of punters with a much greater stack on the leaderboard that will take some catching.
That’s where the Roughie Hunter comes into play… Hopefully I can find you some juicy-priced winners for the weekend that can help you climb the leaderboard and put yourself back into contention.
EAGLE FARM
Race 2 - Hi World @ $13/$4
Classy galloper who handles rain-affected tracks well and has Group level form that the majority of these do not. He can come across from the outside alley, race in a handy position and might prove very hard to beat here.
Race 3 - Jessy Belle @ $31/$7
Very underrated mare who always runs well. She finally gets to her right distance and has drawn a nice alley to save some energy during the run. She has been luckless of late and Blake Shinn is a great booking and with some luck on the turn she can fight her way into the placings.
Race 3 - Blueberry Hill @ $101/$21
The forgotten horse of this QLD Carnival. She was brilliant this time last year and although she’s found a very tough race she is a knockout hope of running into the placings. She was ridden upside down a fortnight ago and I expect given a colder ride from Tommy Berry today she can improve sharply. Rain affected track poses no issues and the $21 place price is very hard to ignore.
Race 4 - Mr Individual @ $26/$7
Smart horse who comes up for a very open race here. He beat He’s Our Rokki over a mile last prep and he presents here third-up on a track that should suit him perfectly. Damien Oliver will give him every chance from that gate and he’s a generous price given his record over the mile. The top-weight Too Good To Refuse is a nice hope at odds as well!
RANDWICK
Race 1 - Vienna Waltz $17/$4.20
Rail out 6m at Randwick should make it the inside draw more favourable than usual. She’s got form on heavy tracks and looked ok in a recent trial here. With some question marks around some key runners in this race, you could do worse.
Race 8 - Mount Nebo $17/$4.40
Genuine wet-tracker who has a solid fresh record. Recent trial was reasonable and I can see him getting a cheap run through and he will be very strong late. I’ll concede it’s hard to see him winning a race of this quality normally but can certainly see him running a drum.
FLEMINGTON
Race 3 - Rocket’s Red Glare @ $31/$8.50
A horse who is still going through his grades with a nice turn of foot and he finds a pretty winnable race at Flemington. He is drawn to hit the right part of the track and is a very juicy place price.
Race 7 - She’s Clean @ $11
A very smart mare in a perfect race for her. The only negative I can find is that she ran last week on a testing crack and didn’t seem to settle at all. The fact Waller has her in down in Melbourne should indicate she has pulled up well though. There is enough pace in this race that she should be able to sit three wide with some cover and have the last crack at them. She’s a better horse than Whistle Baby who’s $4.60 equal favourite. Doesn’t make sense.
MORPHETTVILLE
Race 5 - Balagari @ $8
Very capable gelding who didn’t fire a shot first-up in a race like this one. Expect he can improve sharply second-up as he has done in the past. He ran very well in January behind one of the best 1400m horses in the country in Lucky Hussler. Maps perfectly today and seems well weighted.
