Hard, but not impossible.
For me, one of my favourite beers is Two Birds Taco. Sometimes, I feel like it’s actually No1 on my list.
That’s the thing with “favourite beer” lists, the order is never set in stone. But Taco has always been in the top three.
I’ve been a fan of it ever since I tried it at the GABS beer festival back in 2013.
Then I spent some time hassling co-owners Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen on social media to bottle the beer, because I wanted to drink it again.
They finally did – and I've bought several cases of it since. And I never buy cases of beer.
The name of the beer comes from Lewis and Allen taking a trip to Southern California and being inspired by the flavour of fresh Mexican tacos.
But how to make a beer taste like a taco? And do so in a way that wouldn’t be disgusting?
Well, they used corn as part of the base and added in coriander leaf and lime peel.
Sure, the coriander could be a deal-breaker for some. That’s very much a “love it or hate it” herb and those in the latter camp may well not like this for the flavour is noticeable.
But it’s also blended in well with the lightness of the corn and the lime cuts in over the top to create real zest and freshness.
It might be a little bit hard to find but, trust me, it’s truly worth seeking out.
Unless, of course, you don’t like coriander.
