For the past 30 years, Illawarra passengers have been aboard a number of heritage steam and diesel trains operated by 3801 Limited. The not-for-profit marked the occasion by celebrating with passengers aboard the Cockatoo Run – a journey which has become a staple for the organisation.
Long-time volunteer Ian Smith said the trip remains incredibly enjoyable.
“Each trip is enjoyable and always very different,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter how many times you are on the train, it’s the most enjoyable trip every time.”
Departing at Central Station, the Cockatoo Run travels through Wollongong to Moss Vale before returning. Mr Smith said the locomotives allow passengers to reminisce on the past.
“Steam trains are nostalgic,” he said.
“The diesels we have are vintage and the [Cockatoo Run] locomotive was built back in the 1960’s.
“Some of the cars have done over 1,000,000 kilometres and as long as we can continue restoring them they will continue.”
