The Rush were belted by the Flames in Wollongong last year but after posting 7/138 dismissed Illawarra for just 51 in 13.3 overs.
Chris McNamara gave Illawarra a dream start taking two wickets in the first four balls of the match, but the Rush recovered to post a seven an over target.
Keira’s Neel Honavar, batting at No 8, top-scored with 14 and was the only player to make double figures.
Sydney Sixers Academy batsman Adam Semple (48) led the Rush’s batting fightback along with Kaine Harmsworth (29).
Ex-Sutherland second grade skipper McNamara took 2-21 (3 overs), Kyle Brockley (2-22, 4 overs) and Port Kembla captain Jason Ralston (4-34, 4 overs) for the Flames. The Rush face Newcastle in round 2 on Nov 6.
