The 16-year-old was hit by a northbound train, just north of the Bong Bong Road level crossing, about 4.20pm.
Trains on the South Coast Line were delayed as emergency services came to the teen’s aid.
Lake Illawarra police inspector Brian Pedersen said the boy would be airlifted to Sydney’s Children’s Hospital at Randwick.
“He has severe lacerations to the head but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening,” Insp Pedersen said.
The boy’s parents were at his side as an ambulance rescue chopper collected him at nearby Reid Park, and prepared for take-off.
The train had come to rest on the level crossing.
The Mercury understands the train was preparing to stop at Dapto station, and was not travelling at full speed when it collided with the boy.
Initial reports indicate the boy was knocked onto his back, in between the train tracks. Though multiple carriages passed overhead, he did not go under the wheels.
Passengers were transferred onto buses as the site was cleared.
A shuttle train continued to run between Albion Park and Kiama.
The NSW Transport Management Centre advised train services between Unanderra and Albion Park resumed about 5.40pm.
Police will examine CCTV footage from the train station as part of an inquiry into the incident, which is not believed the result of suspicious circumstances.
