A 43-year-old woman allegedly produced a knife and struck another woman in the face during a verbal altercation in Globe Lane about 12.10pm on Tuesday.
The lunchtime fracas prompted a mass police response, but not before a citizen’s arrest had taken place in the busy CBD laneway.
“The female offender has left the area and was followed by a civilian and detained. Police arrived a short time later,” Detective Inspector Darren Kelly, from Wollongong police, said.
The civilian was a nearby shop owner. A shop owner chose not to comment when approached by the Mercury.
The injured woman, 46, was taken to hospital with a small laceration to her ear.
The 43-year-old was charged and given conditional bail. She will appear in Wollongong Local Court on January 10.
(An earlier version of this story indicated the woman arrested, and later charged, was aged 44. This information was provided by the police immediately following the incident and has since been revised.)
