But former NSW cop Jason Hall seemed to take a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ approach when it came to his own sense of right and wrong.
And his work buddies copped the fallout of his poor choices.
Hall, a former leading senior constable, was busted stealing hard-earned money from his own colleagues at Lake Illawarra Police Station.
The Kiama resident took took more than $15,000 from the station’s Highway Patrol Adventurer Club bank account, court documents revealed.
The offending occurred over two separate time frames; $7370 was taken between September 2014 and April 2015, while a further $7810 was swiped between February 2016 and July 2016.
On each occasion, Hall transferred money from the adventure club bank account into one of two personal accounts he had set up in his own name. Hall was formally charged on September 9.
The 46-year-old was excused from fronting Wollongong Local Court during a brief mention of his matter on Wednesday, however his lawyer, Matt Ward, entered guilty pleas to two charges of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception on his behalf.
Mr Ward said a plea deal had been reached with prosecutors meaning Hall will be formally sentenced on only one of the charges, however the other charge will be taken into account in determining the severity of the sentence.
Mr Ward sought an adjournment to June 30, saying he needed time to prepare psychological reports ahead of the sentencing hearing.
At the time of his arrest, police said Hall’s duty status was being reviewed, however Mr Ward confirmed in court on Wednesday that Hall was no longer a serving police officer.
