Watch the Chamber Dances this weekend at Wollongong Art Gallery for free

Choreographer Lisa Maris McDonell has always loved the space which is now the BlueScope Gallery, a space she said “just asks to be danced in”.

After learning of the infamous “table of knowledge” and sex-and-bribery scandal which came to light in 2008 Ms McDonell was intrigued and prompted to think about the psychology of groups.

“My work is about the relationship between body and place and so I looked into the history of the building and was struck by the history,” she said.

“I was just intrigued … of how these things can happen in groups, how people can either turn a blind eye or not know or kind of be in denial.”

Ms McDonell, who’s been choreographing since 1986, wants to push boundaries with this piece using elements of improvisation and challenge its audience’s thinking – not just about relationships but of performance.

“What we’re offering is seen throughout the world these days … but not usually in regional centres. Usually regional centres will see something that’s been tried and tested,” she said.

“It’s not your usual show. The dancers are kind of negotiating each other and the space and these certain directions I’ve given them.”

Six dancers (mostly from Austinmer Dance Theatre) have been chosen to bring Ms McDonell’s vision to light.

Spectators can come and go as they please during the performance times of 12:30 to 3:30pm Saturday and Sunday.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation into allegations of corruption involving developers and former council staff has also inspired a stage play titled Table Of Knowledge.
