Police stopped a 34-year-old bike rider for a minor offence on Davidson Street about 12.30am.
The man was searched and a pocket knife was found attached to the front of his jacket and a replica pistol found in his backpack, police allege.
Lake Illawarra Police charged the man with possess unauthorised pistol and having custody of a knife in a public place.
He was refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.
