Wollongong DJ Szabo remakes the hit that reignites Daryl Braithwaite's career 'Horses'

After nearly a decade forging a name behind the scenes in the music industry it’s time the 31-year-old former Dapto High School student stepped to the front.

Szabo is gearing up to release his debut original dance song “Gravity” featuring English pop star Newton Faulkner.

But before that, he’s giving the world a taste of what he can do on Friday with a remake of the pub classic “Horses” (video below), the hit that reignited Daryl Braithwaite’s career in 1990.

Having played many cover gigs at hotels in his time, Szabo said it’s one of the most requested songs and feels like it’s part of Australian culture.

“It’s a really weird song, ‘Horses’, I don’t even know what its about,” he laughed.

“I thought I would just give it a shot and I thought I would definitely get a reaction - negative or positive - it’s art so I want a reaction, that’s the point.”

He chose to use a female vocalist, Emily Hanks, “so it wouldn’t be comparable to Daryl”. The finished product likely to have feet moving on club dance floors.

The multi-instrumentalist has already had a “satisfying” moment, after emailing Braithwaite to let him know he was releasing a remake.

Szabo had hung onto his email address after meeting the star years ago at a gig, and to his delight Braithwaite gave him his tick of approval and wished him luck.

In his early 20’s Szabo fronted the pop-rock band Jolan while working as a session guitarist in Sydney (something he continues to do today)

But after their first album he realised a band wasn’t for him so went on to spend years writing and producing for other people.

“I’ve been writing for years so I’m really interested in getting original material out,” the musician said.

“Remixes have become commercial so as a producer there’s a moment to capitalise on that but ultimately I’m a songwriter, that’s what I want to do.”

“Horses” by Szabo x Teddy Cream is available for download Friday July 7.

It debuted in the iTunes Australia Top 10 and #2 on the dance charts – giving him more chance of radio stations nationally picking it up.
