Vaso Bubanja was released on conditional bail including a $1 million property surety when he fronted Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday after being apprehended at Lake Illawarra Police Station while reporting on bail the previous morning.
Bubanja is alleged to have repeatedly punched and kicked the victim inside the male toilets just moments after meeting him in the pokie room and allegedly asking if he knew where to source cocaine.
Defence lawyer Arjun Chhabra told the court it was the alleged victim who had attacked Bubanja first and that his client had been defending himself.
Police opposed Bubanja’s release, however Magistrate Claire Girotto found “strict” bail conditions could mitigate the risk of Bubanja failing to turn up to court or committing further offences.
The case returns to court in August. Bubanja was supported in court by family.
