Anglers slapped with big penalty for shellfish haul

The couple was found guilty for both offences at Burwood District Court and ordered to pay $6330 in total.

Anglers are reminded Sydney Harbour is closed to the taking of all shellfish.

Anyone wishing to collect invertebrates is reminded that they must ensure that they are hand gathering in an area that is open to collecting, pay the recreational fishing fee unless exempt and adhere to strict bag and size limits.

Collectors should also be aware that dioxins are present in Sydney Harbour and may pose a health risk if shellfish are illegally harvested and consumed.

In an another incident, a 54-year-old father and his 30-year-old son were apprehended in possession of 33 undersize fish after being inspected at the Kyeemagh boat ramp on the Cooks River, after fishing in Botany Bay. NSW DPI Fisheries officers inspected an esky on the family boat and found 21 silver trevally, 11 snapper and one bream, all of which were under size.

A search of the boat also located a illegal dry cast net on board.

The cast net and all 33 undersize fish were seized and retained as evidence and the men were issued fines for a number of offences.
