Editorial November 11 2017

Our front page of Saturday, November 11 has gone green.

It carries the simple words of “Save Our Shuttle” in the green of the Gong Shuttle.

Each newsagent poster around the city and indeed the region will carry the same message.

It is a show of support by this masthead for the community campaign against the Government’s decision to start charging people using the free city service as of the new year.

On Sunday at 1 pm in the Crown Street Mall there will be a rally against the decision.

The Wollongong University Student Association is behind the rally, but it is a public event and anyone is welcome to attend. The region has spoken in one voice against this move.

Unfortunately, for too long, a long line of state governments have neglected this community. We can not accept this lying down.

We need to fight it and we urge those who feel as passionately as we do to get to the rally on Sunday.

Make your voice heard and send a direct message to Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Transport Minister  Andrew Constance.  We will not rest until we “Save Our Shuttle”.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward said on ABC Radio on Friday morning we had two opportunities to put our questions to him that we raised in our editorial `Gareth, the questions we want answered’ (Friday, November 10).

Let’s be clear, that is not correct.

Mr Ward spoke to us and advised he would be sending out a written, prepared statement. And that's what he did.

And we published it. He made it very clear he would not be taking questions.

Mr Ward has since promised to answer the questions we have put forward to him and when we receive those answers we will publish those too.

It is obvious Mr Ward feels he cannot fight his own government on this one, despite both sides of the political spectrum locally being vehemently against the decision. That’s the truth.

Please Gareth, stay away from the rubbish political spin used by the Transport Minister and Wollongong’s Most Wanted Andrew Constance. Stick to fighting the good fight for this region.
