Five Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews were called to a Gilmore Street unit complex about 1pm following reports of a kitchen fire.
A FRNSW spokeswoman said the fire reportedly started on the stove, before spreading to the rangehood.
The fire was extinguished prior to the arrival of firefighters and was contained to the kitchen area, she said.
Two people were assessed by paramedics for smoke inhalation at the scene.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said a man in his 30s was assessed for possible smoke inhalation.
Details of the other patient were not available. However, neither of them required transport to hospital.
One lane of Gilmore Street was blocked for a short time and fire trucks – from Wollongong, Balgownie and Unanderra – lined the street.
A number of police cars also responded to the fire.
