Both join the program in its inaugural year with a vast experience and knowledge of AFL and a desire to inspire the next generation of women AFL players.
“The appointment of these two coaches is a brilliant move,” AFL Female Talent Pathway Manager Ash Moeller said. “They will complement each other’s skills and readily be in tune with the selected girls of this program.”
Illawarra women’s AFL player Kate Stanton has heralded the launch of an Illawarra Academy of Sport girls AFL program as an outstanding opportunity for girls to engage in the sport.
“We had nothing like this when I was growing up. Imagine what girls my age could have achieved with something like this.
“For girls in the next generation to have this, they’re going to accomplish so much more than we ever have, so it’s really exciting.”
Stanton believes the program is an indication of how seriously the AFL is taking the women’s game.
Nominations are still open for girls aged 14-16 years old who think they have what it takes and have aspirations to play in the AFL Women’s League.
The primarily skill-based development program is an endorsed program within the AFL NSW women’s pathway, athletes will complete regular training sessions focusing on skill development, engage in off-field education programs and compete in the Your Local Club Academy Games in April to be held in the Hunter.
Registrations for the program close on March 6, with trials to be held on Wednesday March 7 at Bonaira Oval, Kiama. All interested athletes need to register via the IAS website (ias.org.au).
