The man is believed to be accused of dousing a car that was parked in the ambulance bay with petrol, and threatening to set it alight.
He was believed to be armed with a knife.
Police were expected to lay charges overnight.
Earlier, a spokesman for NSW Police said the hospital itself was unaffected.
"We can assure the public that there's been no breach of security at the hospital and that operations at the hospital are ongoing as normal."
Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District had confirmed an incident at the hospital.
Staff there were working with police, the spokeswoman said.
A spokesperson for Wollongong Hospital said: "Wollongong Hospital is currently working with NSW Police following an incident outside the Emergency Department.
"At this stage, people are being advised to avoid the area around Wollongong Hospital if possible.
"Further information will be provided as it become available."
