Nearly a dozen giant objects have appeared at the Wollongong Botanic Garden this week. Some look as though an ancient tribe has left them there, others perhaps seem to be constructed by alien architects.

The reality is eleven local and national artists have created these giant works for the biannual Sculpture In The Garden which are on display now.
Wollongong City Council’s Sue Savage is one of the judges of the competition and said the artist brief was to make something that “responded to place”.
One will be chosen to receive a $30,000 prize and will remain on permanent display in the garden along with the 2016 winner, King Coal by Louis Pratt.
“When I judge I look for something that tells a story to me and doesn’t sit in isolation but speaks to me about the place that it’s in. In terms of it’s actual form – it’s something I would want to keep looking at, not look at once and walk past ,” she said.
“A lot of them use steel, and often old recycled materials so a lot of them use recycled metals. There are a couple utilising discarded and re-purposed materials. We sometimes have some bronze and stone ... concrete, timber – they’re often the common materials used.”
The sculptures will be on show until May 20 with the public getting to vote on who will win the $3000 People’s Choice prize.
“You can share your photos on Instagram, just be sure to use our hashtag #WASA2018 so everyone can see them,” Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said.
The overall winner of the competition will be announced on April 11 and the People’s Choice announced on May 17.
