Macarthur led 3-0 in the 60th minute after a Georgia Yeoman-Dale double either side of half and a header from Rose Galea.
The Rays pull one back through Evelyn Chronis in the 64th minute and pushed for another shortly after when Talitha Kramer was fouled in the box.
However, the usually reliable right boot of Michelle Carney couldn’t find a way past the outstretched hands of Rams keeper Shamiran Khamis.
Despite the defeat, Illawarra remain in the top five after seven rounds.
Sydney University, who beat the Stingrays last weekend in Wollongong, lead the competition with six wins and a draw to start the campaign.
Illawarra play Sutherland Shire FA at JJ Kelly Park next weekend.
