Just 7757 people turned up for Melbourne City's home tie against Brisbane Roar and just over 15000 for Melbourne Victory's win over Adelaide United at the same venue. Those sort of numbers highlight again how the league has stagnated in recent seasons.
It desperately needs an injection of interest to get those numbers back on the rise again. Fortunately we should finally get it when A-League expansion arrives later this year. Last week the Wollongong Wolves officially confirmed that we would be bidding for a spot in the competition.
It’s an exciting prospect.
From Helensburgh to Eden, we want people all the way down the South Coast to support this football team.
The expressions of interest are not required to be submitted until May 24, but there remains a lot to look forward to in the weeks and months ahead. In the meantime, we can still enjoy the remainder of the final series.
Albion Park’s own Luke Wilkshire and Helensburgh’s Aaron Calver are still in the hunt with Sydney FC and look every chance of adding another title to their overflowing trophy cabinet. The region’s had a rich history of locals getting their chance on the big stage, so we wish them all the best of luck.
- CUP FULL
Last Friday’s FFA Cup draw appears to be fairly favourable for the Illawarra’s remaining clubs. Wollongong Olympic’s home stand against APIA Leichhardt looks to be the toughest match up while we are expecting a tough hit-out against NSW NPL 2 side Spirit FC.
Bulli face a difficult test against St George, but Tarrawanna and Albion Park look to have winnable games.
