The alter egos of Nick Giannopoulos and Mary Coustas have performed in Wollongong many times but it was their first look at Anita’s and they were very impressed.
Wollongong will be the only regional city on a national tour of a new comedy stage show they have been working on called Star Wogs - The Ethnics Strike Back.
For Giannopoulos and Coustas it will be the first time they have worked together on stage since Wog-A-Rama in 1993.
“I can’t think back to the big tours we did at the beginning without Wollongong really taking a big part of that memory,” Coustas said.
“I am very very excited to be back.”
So when they were planning their first stage show together in 25 years there was no way they were going to leave out the city Jim refers to as Wogigong.
“We have so many fans here who have supported us over the years,” Giannopoulos said.
“Wollongong was a major part of our development. And we love staying at the Novotel. I didn’t come here last year with Wogs Out of Work and the Wollongong fans were up in arms. So I made Wollongong a promise that the next show I do I will be back. Our fans have been loyal here for 30 years. They have been extraordinary.”
The national tour begins in August and two shows have already been scheduled and are selling well at Anita’s Theatre in October where Giannopoulos and Coustas will be joined by internet comedy sensations Sooshi Mango.
Coustas performed in Wollongong on her own recently. But after being busy working on their own projects over the years she said they were both excited to be back onstage together.
Giannopoulos said they both had a wonderful chemistry when they worked togather and he was confident this will be the best stage show they have ever done.
“At the moment it is two shows in Wollongong that are selling very well. In the coming days we are going to need to make a decision on whether we add extra shows. But at this stage that decision has not been made. It is selling stronger than what I expected.”
The two writers, performers and producers said they love Anita’s Theatre.
“It is a lovely theatre. Beautiful,” Giannopoulos said.
“And it is lovely to come and play at such an old space in Wollongong. And we have heard great things from friends of ours who have played here. Colin Hay and Jon Stevens have both raved about Anita’s.”
