Steven Edwards, 39, was rushed to hospital after he was wounded in a fight that broke out outside a Wollongong methadone clinic in Denison Street shortly before 6am.
Police confirmed Mr Edwards died a short time later, however they would not elaborate on the extent of his injuries the man, only to say an autopsy would be undertaken.
Detectives spent hours combing the scene, with Dension Street cordoned off to the public for most of the day.
On Friday night, police issued a warrant for the arrest of 52-year-old Michael Graham Gale and called for public assistance in locating him.
Anyone who sees Gale or believes they know his whereabouts is urged not to approach him but to contact triple zero immediately. Wollongong police Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said all tips will be kept confidential.
During a press conference with media earlier in the day, Acting Superintendent Chad Gillies said police were called to the clinic just before daybreak following reports of a fight on the footpath outside.
He said officers found Mr Edwards with a stab wound to his chest and tried desperately to save him.
“My understanding is CPR was administered to the male at the scene, there was an amount of blood at the scene,” Supt Gillies said.
Mr Edwards was rushed to Wollongong Hospital but died a short time later.
Supt Gillies said Mr Edwards, from Bulli, was on his way to visit the methadone clinic when the fight broke out.
The altercation involved two people, he said.
The Mercury understands a number of people in the area at the time were interviewed by detectives. CCTV is also being reviewed as part of the investigation.
The crime scene was examined by forensic police, as public order and riot squad officers searched the street. No knife or weapon was found, police said.
Supt Gillies said the exact type of weapon used to stab Mr Edwards was unknown but “it was certainly an instrument that was used to potentially inflict a stab wound”.
Yellow-and-black markers on the footpath identified the location of the fight, while a pile of bloodied clothes left in situ as the scene was forensically photographed
