President of the Gerringong NAA, Chris Nicolaides, was delighted VADM Barrett was part of the association.
Mr Nicolaides said Tim had always been a strong supporter of local naval and ex-service organisations and events.
“Tim is a highly valued member of our community and we look forward to his active contributions into the future,” he said.
VADM Barrett retired after four years as Chief of Navy in July 2018, and after 42 years distinguished naval service.
He joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1976 as a Seaman Officer and later specialised in aviation and served at sea in numerous ships as a Seaman Officer and then as a Flight Commander.
As a naval aviator, he lived and worked in the South Coast area for much of his career and is well known locally.
He served as the Commanding Officer 817 Squadron operating Sea King helicopters, Commanding Officer HMAS Albatross, and Commander Australian Navy Aviation Group. He was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2006 for his achievements in naval aviation.
Later senior appointments included Commander Border Protection Command and Commander Australian Fleet; he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014 for this service.
