The grandstand’s roof has been corroded by the sea air and will be replaced as part of a $1.4 million makeover.
The structure, formerly the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre grandstand, has been in place for 17 years.
Paul Doorn, from Venues NSW, said the roof replacement was “complex project” and work would be carried out offsite to “reduce impact to the stadium schedule”.
“Contractors will dismantle the existing grandstand roof, take the purlins (horizontal beams) off, dismantle the roof trusses and send them offsite to be repaired,” Mr Doorn said.
“This means we can blast the paint in a controlled workshop environment, which will reduce potential damage to the coastal environment and improve the quality of the repair.”
