Operation Slow Down was launched at midnight on Friday on the same day as a 25-year-old man Figtree man was detected allegedly travelling at 154km/h in a sign posted 110km/hr area on the M1 at Bulli Tops.
The incident occurred at 8.15am and the man was issued a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30km/h.
In another incident a 40-year-old man from Mollymook Beach was issued a Field Court Attendance notice for high-range PCA after he was stopped on Squires Way, North Wollongong, for a random breath test.
The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station after returning a positive roadside breath test. There his breath analysis reading was 0.182. His licence was also suspended.
The high-visibility Operation Slow Down traffic operation continues until 11.59pm on Monday.
Double demerits are being enforced all three days of the long-weekend for all speeding, mobile phones, seatbelt, and motorcycle-helmet offences.
Motorists are also being reminded that an extra demerit point was recently added to the penalty for illegally using a mobile phone while driving. With an additional two demerit points in double demerit periods it means there is a total of 10 demerit points for the offence.
The three lives lost in two crashes during Operation Slow Down so far, is the same number of fatalities as for the corresponding time in 2017.
The total number of deaths on NSW roads this year is 281, which is two people more than at the same time last year (279).
Police are concerned at the significant amount of speeding offences overnight, with more than 1300 speeding incidents across the state since Operation Slow Down commenced.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Middlemiss of the state’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said drivers cannot become complacent while travelling across the state’s roads this long weekend.
“Police will put every resource available into ensuring families get to and from their holiday destinations safely,” she said.
“Drivers, before heading out, ensure you have had adequate rest, you’re not under the influence, and your mobile phone or tablet will not become a distraction on the journey”.
