Jamberoo brothers Simon and Michal Maslanka, Kiama’s Mark Churmycz and Warilla-Lake South’s Tynan Forster were all part of Poland’s campaign, which culminated in a tough 14-10 win against the Phillipines, featuring Milton-Ulladulla’s Blake Mackey, in the decider at St Marys Leagues Stadium – to claim their first piece of international silverware and fifth overall spot in the competition.
“We got off to a strong start, which was what we needed and went into half-time with a 14-nil lead,” Simon Maslanka said.
“In the second half, a few things didn’t go our way and we were on back foot for a little bit but our defence held out and we come away with the win – which was amazing.”
The win for Poland, who went through the whole tournament undefeated, was set up by tries to Chippie Korostchuk, Harry Siejka and Ethan Niszczot – who also landed one kick.
While in the loss Richard Goodwin and Daniel Kucia scored for the Phillipines, with Jordan Bien adding one conversion.
“This win means a lot to all the boys, as we know we are out there representing our family’s heritage – this win has put Poland on the rugby league map,” Maslanka said.
“The whole experience has been unreal and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to go through this tournament with.”
