The two stores annually rank in the nation’s top three money raisers for Ronald McDonald House Charities. And the Dwarte family believes that is because of the effort from staff and the Illawarra community’s enormous generosity.
Glenn Dwarte said all four of his family’s stores were busy as were all the other McDonald’s in the Illawarra.
He said there was no doubt people came out especially to support the great work Ronald McDonald House does for families of sick or injured children.
“It has been a big day,” Mr Dwarte said.
“From 10.30 on all four of our stores have been very very busy.
“The Illawarra is a great community that always helps any good cause. They really get behind McHappy Day. And the people came out to support it were really happy.
“It has been very much a family day. We will definitely up there among the top money raisers in Australia again.
“All the store coordinators have done a great job. They have raised plenty of money and I do expect to be right up there again”.
Mr Dwarte said one thing he had noticed this year was a large number of people just giving there $5, $10, $20 and $50 notes as straight out donations into the buckets in store for the cause. “And people can still make donations that way tomorrow”.
He said the McHappy Day socks had been particularly popular this year
“We ran out of the socks at 11am,” he said.
“We have been selling them for the last two weeks. We still had plenty in the morning but they were soon all gone.”
Three years ago McDonald’s Warrawong raised the most money of any restaurant in Australia.
Then two years Warilla beat Warrawong to raise the most.
Last year Warrawong raised the most money for NSW and the ACT.
And finished second in Australia.
