Acting Inspector Peter Northey said the vehicle was seen to clip a tree on Allan Street as it continued to turn left onto Wentworth Lane around 4am.
He said it then came to a halt before going up in flames.
A local resident told the Mercury she was woken by the “loud bangs” and could see “big blue flames”.
“On the corner of Wentworth [Lane] and Allan Street there is damage to a tree and a P-plate wedged in it,” she said.
Multiple ambulances were called to the scene, however Inspector Northey said the occupant of the vehicle fled before emergency services arrived.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Lake Illawarra police, or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
