Peever was forced to step down as Cricket Australia (CA) chairman after the release of an independent report that described the governing body as arrogant and controlling.

Peever initially attempted to dig in but was given the tap on the shoulder by Cricket NSW counterpart John Knox, almost six weeks ago.

Earl Eddings replaced Peever as CA boss but the former managing director of Rio Tinto Australia had also been in charge of the organising committee for the next T20 World Cup in 2020.

That responsibility will now fall to CA board member Harnden, a proven performer when it comes to big events.

It means the only boardroom uncertainty remaining for the sport in Australia is which two directors will replace Peever and Mark Taylor, who also resigned last month, on CA's board.

Harnden was the chief executive of the ODI World Cup that Australia and New Zealand successfully co-hosted in 2015, and also chief executive of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Corporation.

Harnden, the chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, was on the final shortlist to replace James Sutherland as CA's chief executive but the board instead went with Kevin Roberts.

Australia will host the male and female editions of the T20 tournament in 2020, with both finals to be staged at the MCG.

Nick Hockley, chief executive of the organising committee, has already outlined a vision to fill the venue and break the world record for the highest attendance at a women's sporting match.

Eddings and Roberts have also joined the organising committee's board.
