Revenue NSW data obtained by the Mercury has revealed the government agency holds almost 19,000 unclaimed items in the region – from deceased estates, share dividends, bonds, overpayments and other sources.
The unclaimed cash – from government agencies, private companies, councils, and state trustees – sits with Revenue NSW because the owners’ details are out of date and they’re hard to track down.
The most cash up for grabs in the region was in Wollongong’s 2500 postcode, with 3040 unclaimed items worth $879,396.
The Illawarra figure forms part of a whopping $152 million in ‘forgotten’ money statewide.
