The five-year-old daughter of Pluck broke a winning drought of more than 12 months when she hung tough to win the Gary “Jinxy” Hinkley Memorial Class 2 Handicap (1400m). Jockey Jess Taylor stole a run along the inside before holding out Terry Robinson’s Sestina by a long neck, with Lauri Wray trained Cosimo in third.
“She really toughed it out good,” Bateup said.
“I thought she was actually off the bit coming to the turn and then she started up the inside. Even when she leveled up with the second horse, I thought she might have peaked on her run but she was tough.”
After Monday’s win, Titaness remains eligible to contest the Provincial Championships heats as she has less than 20 career starts.
However, Bateup plans to keep her options open.
“I am half thinking aiming her at the Bega Cup [in February] but then I think I could nearly have a crack at one of the heats,” she said. “The thing is with the Provincial Championships, she is a nice horse, but it is difficult with those horses of Kris Lees which are genuine Saturday Sydney, bordering on black type horses.”
