A detailled severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Greater Wollongong.
The bureau says severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Dapto and Lake Avon at 4.15pm.
These thunderstorms are moving towards the east.
They are forecast to affect Wollongong, Bulli and Pt Kembla by 4.45pm and Shellharbour by 5.15pm.
Large hailstones and damaging winds are likely, the bureau said.
2.55pm: Severe thunderstorms in the Greater Wollongong area have temporarily eased.
The Bureau of Meteorology says further severe storms are still possible and the situation is being closely monitored.
Further detailed warnings will be issued as necessary.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Illawarra, including Wollongong and Kiama.
Hail was reported at Robertson on Tuesday afternoon.
However, it appears the storms lost intensity after moving across the escarpment and interacting with the sea breeze.
2.30pm: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Greater Wollongong and the wider Illawarra on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that, at 2.15 pm, severe storms were detected on the weather radar west of Kiama.
The storms are moving towards the east and are forecast to affect Gerringong, Kiama and Shellharbour by 2.45pm, and waters off Kiama by 3.15pm.
Large hailstones and damaging winds are likely, the bureau has warned.

A general severe thunderstorm warning for large hailstones and damaging winds is current for parts of the Metropolitan, Illawarra and Central Tablelands forecast districts.
The bureau says storms may produce large hailstones and damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours.
Locations which may be affected include Penrith, Wollongong, Bowral, Campbelltown, Springwood and Bilpin.
