Relay for Life is a 24-hour event raising funds for Cancer Council NSW.
The 2019 Relay for Life will take place at Tom 'Scout' Willoughby Oval, Shellharbour on April 6-7.
The theme for the 2019 Relay will be ‘life’s a beach’.
Therefore, the Relay was officially launched on Wednesday at Shellharbour North Beach.
Spreading the Relay message was Shellharbour event ambassador Sam Jones.
In September 2017, the 47-year-old Shell Cove resident was diagnosed with grade three breast cancer.
Having undergone treatment, she’s currently in remission.
“I like to tell people, if they think something’s there, if they think something’s not right, follow it up," she said.
“Go with your gut feeling if you’re not sure.”
Also ready to Relay is cancer survivor and regular Shellharbour Relay participant Tony Purdon.
“Having had cancer myself and being a survivor, it’s a practical thing we can do as a community – getting together and showing a resolve to find money and support for each other,” he said.
Since its inception in 2012, the Shellharbour Relay for Life has raised funds for Illawarra cancer support services and prevention programs.
These include in-home help and transport to cancer treatment.
The 2018 Relay had 631 participants and raised $77,285.08.
Grant Plecas, community lead for Cancer Council NSW Southern Region said participants could attend for one hour or 24 hours.
“The event has raised valuable funds for local services in the Shellharbour area, and local people have benefited from them,” Mr Plecas said.
The Relay weekend will also feature live entertainment, children’s activities, health educational stalls and food stalls.
