After winning the toss and batting on a flat pitch, ACT/NSW Country were all out for 257 late in the day.
Captain Jay Lenton top-scored for the Comets with a patient 81, with the wicketkeeper combining with Joe Kershaw for a crucial 66-run seventh-wicket partnership.
That partnership came after ACT/NSW Country had lost 3-0 to slump to 5-80.
Charlie Stobo and Liam Hatcher were the chief wicket-takers for NSW Metro, with both men claiming three scalps.
With ACT/NSW Country's 10th wicket falling on the stroke of stumps, NSW Metro openers Ryan Hackney and Daniel Solway were forced to face one final over to end the day.
The duo survived the challenge, however, making their way to 0-2 at stumps.
Play will resume at 10.30 on Tuesday.
