The four-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 37 William Street, Keiraville will be auctioned on April 13.
Sitting on a 704sqm block, it has a bidders' guide of $780,000 to $830,000.
Ann, 83, and George Young, 85, have been married for 63 years.
They bought the block and built the home, which was completed in 1965.
"It was the last very big block left in Keiraville," Mrs Young said.
They envisioned building a house where they could raise a family and potentially remain for the rest of their lives.
Having previously lived mostly in the Illawarra, they were drawn to Keiraville by the close-knit community and family-friendly feel.
"It was more like a little village then," Mrs Young said.
"It was a nice place to live, and wasn't considered close to Wollongong then.
"It was a small place; we all had small children and everybody went to the little pre-school and the school.
"So you got to know your neighbours, and it had a country feeling."
The Youngs initially owned both No.37 and No.37A, before subdividing and selling off the latter in 1974.
The couple has hosted international students in recent years.
"There's very nice people in Keiraville, but the demographics change, and a lot of families now, both parents work and their lives are not so much in Keiraville," Mrs Young said.
"But it's still a lovely community-minded place. Up at the shopping centre, particularly on Saturdays, it's quite cosmopolitan in a way.
"That's because we've got lots of university people and lots of students, and it's a very leafy, pleasant place to live."
Mrs Young said her favourite feature of the home was the back verandah.
"There's all the lovely ferns and my husband feeds the birds," she said.
"It's a nice house, but the back verandah's the best place as far as I'm concerned, overlooking the park."
Mr Young is a retired plumber who is well-known in the area, and still helps out friends when he can.
"He also ran his own business, the Illawarra Solar Centre - we were into solar before it became fashionable," Mrs Young told the Mercury.
"He used to make his own panels up on the back verandah in the 1960s, when no one really knew about them."
The couple are relocating to be nearer their daughter on the South Coast.
"I liked Wollongong back when we moved here, and I still love Wollongong - I'm sorry to leave," Mrs Young said.
According to the Domain Group, the median price for a four-bedroom house in Keiraville is $935,000, with 12 sold this year.
The average age of residents is 20 to 39.
The selling agent is Stone Real Estate's Neil Webster.
"Their house is a real flashback as it has pretty much remained untouched in style," he said. "It's generated great interest being in the popular Keiraville suburb.
"I had 18 groups inspect at the first open house recently."
