It makes no sense that I like Game of Thrones - none at all.

I was a late adopter to the series. I'd come on board after about series three.
And I maintain that's the best way to do it, because it means I was able to binge watch a bunch of seasons over the space of a week or two - courtesy of my brother's extensive DVD collection.
That meant I got hooked via the "hey, that episode was good, let's watch just one more" approach, so I was well and truly invested in the story by the end of the first season.
Also I was able to keep track of what each member of the massive cast was doing.
Ever since I've been watching it "live", I've had to use the internet to help refresh my memory as to just who some of these people are (the show's habit of killing people off is a blessing in disguise - imagine how much harder things would be if all those characters were still around).
Since then I've become a fan of the series; so much so that when they announce the air date for a new season, I write it down on the calendar to make sure I don't miss it.
Then, when it screens on a Monday, I have a self-imposed social media blackout at work until I can get home and watch it - with a new episode airing in the early afternoon spoilers abound on the internet.
The strangest thing is that I shouldn't like Game of Thrones - it should be a show I avoid like the plague.
You see, I hate faux medieval fantasy TV shows, movies and books. That's why I was a late adopter; I hated the genre so much.
It's a hate that is still there too. I'm a book geek so I figured if I liked the show I'd give the books a crack.
Nope, I lasted a pages before I stopped and realised they weren't for me. I think it's got something to do with all the weird-sounding names; every time I read one it took me out of the world and the story.
Those names are also a reason why I shouldn't like the TV series. For someone who likes the show, I'm hopeless at remembering all but a few of the characters' names.
Instead, I think of them as "the tall one", "the one the tall one killed", "the friend of that guy" and so on.
And with the series finishing up in less than two months I'm running out of time to learn them.
