Political cartoons have a long history in Australia and the luxury of having politicians with great features and personalities for cartoonist to draw. Bob Hawke featured in many cartoons during his time as Prime Minister.
A survey amongst the nation's cartoonist once revealed, Bob Hawke was the most popular Australian Prime minister ever to draw.
Since 1983 when Bob Hawke became Prime Minister he has been my top billing, my all time favourite character and political figures to draw. He provided plenty of "inspiration" for material.
I loved drawing him, you could create him from a simple line drawing to a detailed caricature.
I could draw Hawkie with my eyes shut. Hawkie, had the best significant features, his mouth had this permanent scowl and eyes laying aggressively beneath his eyebrows.
You only needed to draw his eyes and eyebrows to recognise who you were drawing. The other distinctive feature was the immaculate silver hair. RIP Hawkie.
