The Wild About Shellharbour celebrated World Environment Day.
Six winners and six runner up prizes awarded across the three themes of Shellharbour's beaches and waterways, landscapes and native plants, and native wildlife.
Flinders' Aidan Pawson, 11, won the under 17 years landscapes and native plants with a bottlebrush image, the people's choice and was highly commended in the native wildlife category.
He said it was nice his photograph was most people's favourite.
"I like how I can relieve memories when I look at my photos," Aidan said.
"I like to take photos of flowers and birds."
Lake Illawarra's Caroline Armitage was another standout photographer who won the beaches and waterways category with a picture of a bluebottle, and was runner up and highly commended in the native wildlife category.
"I consider myself a budding photographer," she said. "I'm a registered nurse and I love to get outside and take photos of the area.
"I entered the photography competition last year but didn't win and then I won in all three categories I was shortlisted for this year.
"The quality of other photographers, especially the young ones, was incredible."
A shortlist of 60 images have been professionally printed and will be available for viewing in the Shellharbour Civic Centre foyer from June 8 to 20.
Mayor Marianne Saliba said the competition provided a unique opportunity for residents to celebrate their natural environment.
"It is a wonderful way to celebrate our stunning city and all of the things that make is so special to our community," she said.
